Water Heater Leak and Replacement (May/June 2004)

We noticed water on the basement floor after spring cleaning. We thought it was the washer, but later found that it was really the water heater. It was a good thing it didn't fail dramatically during the several weeks (at least) that it leaked before we replaced it.

Next joy: soil stack

Before

The area around the water heater had been full of junk prior to spring cleaning, so we didn't notice at first that the water was coming from the water heater; we thought perhaps the washer was to blame. But the floor was still wet even after we had not used the washer for a few days.

After

The unfinished area of the basement doesn't have the best ventilation, so it took a while for the floor to completely dry after the replacement of the water heater. We purchased a dehumidifier to accelerate the process.

Coincidentally, right after the plumbers left from the installation of the water heater, we discovered a leak somewhere in the dining room wall and ceiling; it turned out later that our soil stack was leaking!
