My father recently gave me an old wire recorder that he had in the attic. It originally came from my maternal grandfather and ultimately from his father.
The wire recorder functions just as a tape recorder does except it records its analog signal magnetically on a thin wire instead of a tape. It uses vacuum tubes instead of transistors because transistors didn't exist yet when it was developed :) The model I have was built either in 1947 or 1948.
I've not dared to try powering it up yet. I have some friends who know better than I do that I ought to have a gadget to ramp up the current gradually to avoid frying the tubes.
